Position size calculator.
Your balance, how much you want to risk and where your stop loss goes: get the lot size for forex pairs, gold, silver and stock indices in one second.
How the position size is worked out
The lot size is whatever makes your stop loss cost exactly the money you chose to risk:
Lots = (Balance × Risk %) ÷ (Stop × Value of that stop for 1 lot)
Example: $10,000 balance, 1% risk = $100. EURUSD stop 20 pips. One lot of EURUSD is 100,000 euros, so one pip (0.0001) is worth $10 a lot and 20 pips $200. $100 ÷ $200 = 0.50 lots.
When the second currency of the pair is not the dollar (USDJPY, EURJPY, EURGBP…), the pip is worth a set amount of that currency, so the calculator converts it with the price you enter. Lots are rounded down to your broker's lot step, so the real risk is never more than you chose.
Pips, points and indices
- Forex pip: 0.0001 for most pairs, 0.01 for yen pairs. A point is a tenth of a pip (the last decimal MetaTrader shows).
- Gold: 1 pip = $0.10, 1 point = $0.01 at most brokers. Silver: 1 pip = $0.01, 1 lot = 5,000 ounces.
- Stock indices: traders count whole index points (US30 at 44,000 → 44,100 = 100 points). What one point is worth for 1 lot is set by your broker, so check the symbol's Specification once and enter it.
