How the gold lot size is worked out
One standard lot of gold (XAUUSD) is 100 ounces. So when gold moves $1, one lot wins or loses $100, 0.10 lots $10, and 0.01 lots $1. That gives the formula:
Lots = (Balance × Risk %) ÷ (Stop in USD × 100)
Example: $5,000 balance, 1% risk = $50. Stop loss $10 below the entry. $50 ÷ ($10 × 100) = 0.05 lots. If the stop is hit, you lose $50, exactly the 1% you planned.
The calculator rounds down to your broker's lot step, so the real risk is never more than you chose.
Pips and points on gold
- USD (price): the plain price distance. Entry 4,000.00, stop 3,990.00 = a $10 stop.
- Points: the smallest price step in MetaTrader. Gold is quoted with 2 decimals at most brokers, so 1 point = $0.01 and a $10 stop is 1,000 points.
- Pips: most gold traders count 1 pip = $0.10, so a $10 stop is 100 pips. Some brokers and courses use other pip sizes; when in doubt, enter the stop in USD.
Quick table at 1% risk
Lots for a 100-ounce contract, rounded down to 0.01.
| Balance | $5 stop | $10 stop | $20 stop | $30 stop |

A dash means even 0.01 lots would risk more than 1%: use a closer stop, a larger account, or skip the trade.
